Objectives :

• Define splints/orthoses and their applications in rehabilitation.

• Identify upper extremity anatomy and biomechanics relevant to splinting.

• Evaluate conditions requiring splinting, including musculoskeletal and post-operative cases.

• Determine appropriate splint types (static, static progressive, dynamic and serial splinting), handling and performance characteristics using clinical reasoning.

• Demonstrate fabrication of common splints (e.g., resting hand, wrist cock-up, short/long thumb spica, mallet finger, ulnar/radial gutter, relative motion orthosis, dorsal blocking splint, trigger finger splint & oval-8).

• Ensure proper fit, comfort, and function for therapeutic use.

• Instruct patients on splint use, wear schedules, and maintenance.

• Address common issues like pain, skin irritation, and functional limitations.

• Implement examples of advanced techniques, such as dynamic and static progressive splints.

• Assess splint effectiveness and modify designs based on patient progress.

• Explore innovations and research in orthoses and hand therapy.

• Use case studies to enhance problem-solving and clinical decision-making.
